Maintaining good oral hygiene requires discipline. There are eight steps to be practiced to maintain good oral hygiene. That makes the mouth clean and free of problems. Below have mentioned 8 steps to maintain oral hygiene.

 

HEALTHY DIET FOR MAINTAINING GOOD ORAL HYGIENE

For good dental wellbeing, remember these tips while picking your meals and snacks: Drink a lot of water. Eat different food varieties from every one of the five significant nutritional categories, including entire grains, natural products, fruits, and vegetables.

BRUSH TWICE A DAY

Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste twice a day for 2 minutes helps to keep the mouth clean and free of micro-organisms. Brushing also helps to remove food debris and plaque which is a white sticky substance present all over the tooth surface.

The best technique of tooth brushing is modified bass where the toothbrush is placed in 45-degree angulation to the tooth surface and moves the brush gently in a jiggling and circular motion.

It is mandatory to replace the toothbrush every 6 months.

GARGLING

Gargling is one of the important steps in maintaining oral hygiene. Gargling helps us to keep the mouth free of food debris. Gargling with warm water and rock salt helps the oral cavity free of diseases. The main advantage of gargling is that it reaches all over oral surfaces where toothbrushes and floss cannot reach.

AVOID CARBONATED DRINKS AND BEVERAGES

Carbonated drinks and beverages should be strictly avoided for good oral hygiene. The acid present in the carbonated drinks makes the tooth enamel erode, this further complicates dental hypersensitivity. Hence avoid carbonated drinks.

FLOSSING

Flossing is one of the steps to maintaining oral hygiene. It is the process of removing food debris and plaque from the interdental surfaces that is in-between teeth with the use of floss thread. The advantage of flossing is that it reaches the surface of the tooth where the toothbrush cannot reach it and also prevents bad breath.

USE FLUORIDATED TOOTHPASTE

The Use of fluoridated teeth prevents tooth decay. Fluoridated toothpaste provides an additional layer of protection over the tooth surface which is against dental decay and plaque build-up. Fluoride promotes re-mineralization which forms a new layer. Fluoride usage in toothpaste is completely safe for adults however supervising children of age below 6 is necessary to avoid swallowing.

AVOID SMOKING AND TOBACCO CHEWING HABITS

A Habit of smoking and tobacco chewing should be completely avoided to prevent oral health from diseases. Using tobacco and smoking habit makes the gums swell and mobility of the tooth occurs which results in loss of teeth. It also leads to staining of teeth and causes bad breath and also alterations in sense of taste and smell are noted.

DENTAL CHECKUP

 A routine dental visit is mandatory every 6 months. Talking to the dentist helps us to recognize the current oral status of the individual.
